Rice concentrate, also called rice hulls, comes from the outer layer of the rice grain. This outer layer is naturally high in fibre and silica. It does not include the white, starchy part of rice.

It’s used in food supplements to stop ingredients from clumping together and to help them flow better during manufacturing. Many supplements use synthetic ingredients like silicon dioxide for this, but Bariboost uses a small amount of rice concentrate instead. The rice concentrate is organic and gluten‑free.

To make the powder, sterilised rice hulls are finely ground using a special, patent‑pending process so the particles are the right size for supplement production.

Rice plants naturally take up silica from the soil, storing it in their hulls. Because of this, rice concentrate offers a natural alternative to synthetic anti‑caking agents like silicon dioxide in food supplements.

Bariboost uses bamboo leaf extract to help keep the ingredients flowing smoothly. Bamboo is a fast‑growing plant that grows mainly in warm climates and has been eaten in Asian countries for hundreds of years.

The extract comes from the leaves of a type of bamboo called Bambusa vulgaris. These leaves naturally contain a lot of silica, which the plant absorbs from the soil as it grows. Because raw bamboo leaves can contain substances that aren’t safe to consume, only specially processed and safe extracts are used.

The bamboo leaf extract in Bariboost is carefully prepared so that it contains 75% silica. Silica helps the body absorb minerals and supports healthy bones, joints, hair, skin, and nails.

The British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) recommends intramuscular vitamin B12 injection every three months.

Bariboost can be safely taken with the recommended injection. If you are worried about taking too much vitamin B12, it is highly unlikely that you will take too much vitamin B12 from supplements. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it dissolves in water and is quickly absorbed by your body. It is stored in the liver and any excess vitamin B12 your body doesn’t need is excreted via urine.

Vitamin B12 is generally considered safe, even when taken in high doses as your body can only absorb a fraction of B12 supplements. Bariboost multivitamin contains 500 mcg of vitamin B12 and a healthy person will only absorb about 10 mcg (absorption is only about 2% at doses of 500 mcg). Those of us who have had bariatric surgery may absorb less as these surgeries can result in the loss of cells that secrete intrinsic factor which is a protein in the stomach needed to absorb vitamin B12.

Adults require 2.4 mcg daily. There is currently no Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) established for vitamin B12 due to its low level of toxicity.

Bariboost bariatric multivitamin is formulated to combine various bariatric vitamins and minerals into 2 capsules a day. Most people post gastric sleeve and gastric bypass will not need to take extra folic acid, vitamin D or iron unless advised to by your doctor.

You will still need to take a separate calcium supplement.

Bariboost bariatric multivitamin contains 50mg of iron bisglycinate (ferrous bisglycinate) which is a gentle form of iron.

The ideal form of iron required by the bariatric patient should contain enough elemental ion, be highly bioavailable (easily absorbed) with low risk of gastro-intestinal (GI) side effects to promote adherence and reduce risk of iron deficiency anaemia after bariatric surgery.

Most multivitamins and bariatric multivitamins brands use ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate or ferrous sulphate in their formulation. Ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulphate has poor bioavailability and causes significant side effects. Ferrous gluconate does not contains enough elemental iron.

At Bariboost, we use Iron bisglycinate also known as ferrous bisglycinate as it is the superior form of supplemental iron and has shown greater benefit over other iron supplements in increasing haemoglobin concentration with reduced GI side effects.

Iron bisglycinate is an amino acid chelate. Chelated iron bisglycinate is formed by binding iron to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Think about it like a chicken sandwich with two slices of bread (amino acid glycine) and a slice of chicken (iron). This unique structure is similar to complexes naturally occurring in our bodies and allows for improved absorption.  Iron bisglycinate does not form insoluble compounds with iron absorption blockers like dietary phytates and tannins which means they are less affected by them. Phytates are mainly found in cereal grains, nuts and legumes while tannins are primarily found in coffee, tea, legumes and some cereal gains.

The chelated form is also more soluble, which means better absorption and better absorption in turn reduces gastrointestinal side effects like heartburn, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

BOMSS Guidance recommends between 45 to 60 mg and 100 mg of elemental iron daily for menstruating women. Bariboost contains 50mg of elemental iron. As chelated ions are better absorbed, a lower doses can be used compared to ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulpate where the bioavailability of supplemented iron ions is very low.

Evidence suggests that ferrous bisglycinate 25 mg elemental iron is as effective as ferrous sulphate 50 mg elemental iron (ferrous sulphate 200 mg is equivalent to 65 mg elemental iron). Using a lower dose treatment simultaneously reduces the chances of side effects and increases the safety of therapy. A study of the tolerability of iron bisglycinate versus ferrous sulphate showed that more people preferred the bisglycinate form because it caused less GI upset.

BOMMS recommends regular bloods monitoring including monitoring of iron levels.

Pullulan capsules used in Bariboost are edible, tasteless, odourless, organic, natural plant-based and vegan capsules made from fermented tapioca starch and contains absolutely no animal products. Pullulan does not react or cross link with the contents of the capsules. It is also not absorbed by the human body which means that only the content of the capsule is absorbed.
