Frequently asked questions
One of the reasons Bariboost is the best bariatric vitamins is because we do not cut corners on ingredients. With us, you can be assured that your supplement is produced using the highest quality premium ingredients, carefully-selected after extensive research.
Not only do we use the best ingredients available, but we also use the best form of those ingredients. Our formulation is actual science. Every ingredient has been hand-picked to ensure we only use the most bioavailable and absorbable form that can be easily handled and used by the body. Using methylated vitamins forms e.g., methylcobalamin (vitamin B12) provides for superior absorption.
We also use Chelated minerals e.g., Iron Bisglycinate, Magnesium Glycinate and Chromium Picolinate, known to be highly absorbable and gentle on the stomach. For example, we use iron Bisglycinate as compared to ferrous fumarate or ferrous sulphate because iron Bisglycinate it is easier to digest, highly absorbable and more bioavailable with less gastrointestinal side effects.
We also use Menaquinone MK-7 known as the gold standard of Vitamin K2 and calcium l-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) which is the natural form of folate and is well absorbed, interacts with fewer medications with a reduced risk of masking symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency than folic acid.
In the table below is the list of bariboost ingredients.
Bariboost contains iron. It is not recommended that calcium and iron are taken at the same time as they may affect the absorption of each other.
Yes, that is because Bariboost contains bariatric doses of vitamins and minerals that may be too high for the general population.
The British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) recommends intramuscular vitamin B12 injection every three months.
Bariboost can be safely taken with the recommended injection. If you are worried about taking too much vitamin B12, it is highly unlikely that you will take too much vitamin B12 from supplements. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it dissolves in water and is quickly absorbed by your body. It is stored in the liver and any excess vitamin B12 your body doesn’t need is excreted via urine.
Vitamin B12 is generally considered safe, even when taken in high doses as your body can only absorb a fraction of B12 supplements. Bariboost multivitamin contains 500 mcg of vitamin B12 and a healthy person will only absorb about 10 mcg (absorption is only about 2% at doses of 500 mcg). Those of us who have had bariatric surgery may absorb less as these surgeries can result in the loss of cells that secrete intrinsic factor which is a protein in the stomach needed to absorb vitamin B12.
Adults require 2.4 mcg daily. There is currently no Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) established for vitamin B12 due to its low level of toxicity.
Bariboost bariatric multivitamin is formulated to combine various bariatric vitamins and minerals into 2 capsules a day. Most people post gastric sleeve and gastric bypass will not need to take extra folic acid, vitamin D or iron unless advised to by your doctor.
You will still need to take a separate calcium supplement.
For most patients, you will only require 2 daily capsules of Bariboost multivitamin + calcium supplement and 3 monthly vitamin B12 injection.
Regular blood monitoring is recommended.
Do I have to take vitamins forever after gastric sleeve? Do I have to take vitamins forever after gastric bypass? Vitamins and mineral supplementation is recommended lifelong for Bariatric patients. Regular monitoring of your nutritional status and blood tests is advised.
The capsule can be opened and taken with water or mixed with yogurt.
Our capsules are pullulan capsules which is tasteless and odourless. Customers report not getting the after taste they got from other multivitamins.
Bariboost is also unflavoured.
Bariboost can only be purchased on this website and on amazon. By selling directly through e-commerce platforms, we are able to provide affordable and accessible products.
No, this is because our multivitamin contains high levels of vitamin A.
Our formulation includes Biotin, Zinc, Folic Acid and Vitamin D which support the maintenance of hair, skin and nails.
Pullulan capsules used in Bariboost are edible, tasteless, odourless, organic, natural plant-based and vegan capsules made from fermented tapioca starch and contains absolutely no animal products. They are safe, stable, easy to swallow, easily digested, and offer protection for oxygen-sensitive and moisture-sensitive ingredients.
Pullulan does not react or cross link with the contents of the capsules. It is also not absorbed by the human body which means that only the content of the capsule is absorbed.
Capsules are purer as unlike tablets, they do not require additives like binders and coatings to maintain its shape. The pullulan capsules we use break down easier in the body, which makes the vitamins and minerals contained more readily available for the body to digest and absorb.
Our bariatric multivitamin capsules are about 2.34cm in length and easy to swallow.
The ideal form of iron required by the bariatric patient should contain enough elemental ion, be highly bioavailable (easily absorbed) with low risk of gastro-intestinal (GI) side effects to promote adherence and reduce risk of iron deficiency anaemia after bariatric surgery.
Most multivitamins and bariatric multivitamins brands use ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate or ferrous sulphate in their formulation. Ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulphate has poor bioavailability and causes significant side effects. Ferrous gluconate does not contains enough elemental iron.
At Bariboost, we use Iron bisglycinate also known as ferrous bisglycinate as it is the superior form of supplemental iron and has shown greater benefit over other iron supplements in increasing haemoglobin concentration with reduced GI side effects.
Iron bisglycinate is an amino acid chelate. Chelated iron bisglycinate is formed by binding iron to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This unique structure is similar to complexes naturally occurring in our bodies and allows for improved absorption as chelated iron is less affected by common iron absorption blockers like dietary phytates found in cereal-based foods.
The chelated form is also more soluble, which means better absorption and better absorption in turn reduces gastrointestinal side effects like heartburn, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
BOMSS Guidance recommends between 45 to 60 mg and 100 mg of elemental iron daily for menstruating women. Bariboost contains 50mg of elemental iron. As chelated ions are better absorbed, a lower doses can be used compared to ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulpate where the bioavailability of supplemented iron ions is very low.
Evidence suggests that ferrous bisglycinate 25 mg elemental iron is as effective as ferrous sulphate 50 mg elemental iron (ferrous sulfate 200 mg is equivalent to 65 mg elemental iron). Using a lower dose treatment simultaneously reduces the chances of side effects and increases the safety of therapy. A study of the tolerability of iron bisglycinate versus ferrous sulphate showed that more people preferred the bisglycinate form because it caused less GI upset.
BOMMS recommends regular bloods monitoring including monitoring of iron levels.
Rice concentrate (or rice hulls) is the fibre and silica part of the outer layer of rice and does not contain any of the white rice.
It is a natural source of silica and one of the most effective anti-caking agents available. Most other food supplement companies use synthetic anti-caking agents like Silicon Dioxide. Bariboost uses a small amount of a natural, certified organic and gluten-free rice concentrate powder.
The rice concentrate powder we use is made by a patent-pending process to grind the sterilized rice hulls in such a way that the silica particle size is optimized for use as flow agents in food supplements.
As rice naturally takes up silica from the soil and concentrates it in its hulls, it produces a healthy and natural alternative to other synthetic anti-caking/flow agents like silicon dioxide.
Bariboost uses Bamboo Leaf Extract as flow agent. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that are distributed in tropical and subtropical to mild temperate regions. Its shoots, leaves and stems have been used in many Asian cuisine delicacies for centuries.
Bamboo is a rich source of natural silica extract. The extract used by Bariboost is derived from the leaves of the Bambusa vulgaris plant. These evergreen leaves contain about 70% silica as they absorb silica from the soil and continue to accumulate it throughout their life. However, since the leaves contain toxic levels of cyanide, only properly processed extract form is used.
Bamboo Leaf Extract 75% Silica has been suggested to be beneficial for mineral absorption and has therapeutic effect for improving the health of your bones, joints, hair, skin, and nails.
Our formulation does not contain the 14 common food allergens including celery, gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites and tree nuts.
We take special care to avoid high-risk allergenic ingredients like milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybean in our formulations. We also take special care to prevent cross-contamination with allergens during the manufacturing process.
Bariboost is formulated to meet the micronutrient replacement recommendation of the British Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS). BOMSS is the UK’s internationally recognised bariatric surgery society that provides expert advice to different bodies. They made guidelines with recommendations for micronutrient replacement before and after bariatric surgery.
We will continue to review the latest research and BOMMS guidance and update our formula in line with scientific evidence, so that Bariboost continues to be the best bariatric vitamin.
All our products are 100% vegan and vegetarian bariatric vitamins and supplements. All the ingredients used in our formula are vegetarian.
We do NOT use gelatin capsules. Most bariatric multivitamins contain “Vegetable cellulose” mainly because it is cheap. While vegetable cellulose capsules are made from plant cellulose, the rigorous manufacturing process it undergoes synthetically alters the cellulose to make it into a hard capsule (referred to as Hypromellose, or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose HPMC).
At Bariboost we take into consideration the health, dietary restriction, and religious needs of every bariatric surgery patient. We also care about the environment. We extensively researched environmentally friendly and vegetarian capsules and found pullulan to be the purest capsule available. Bariboost uses high-quality Pullulan capsules that are certified for pharmaceutical use and approved by the Vegetarian Society. They are Eco-friendly as no toxic chemicals are involved in growing, harvesting and extracting pullulan.
