Malabsorption refers to the reduced ability of the body to absorb nutrients from food following bariatric surgery. This is particularly relevant because many weight loss surgeries, like gastric bypass, alter the digestive system. These changes can significantly affect how the body processes food and absorbs essential nutrients, which in turn impacts eating behavior and food choices.

After bariatric surgery, the digestive system is physically altered. For instance, in gastric bypass procedures, a small pouch is created in the stomach and connected to a portion of the small intestine, bypassing a significant part of the stomach and upper intestine. This means that when food is consumed, it moves quickly through the gastrointestinal tract. Since there’s less time for the small intestine to digest and absorb nutrients, this leads to malabsorption.

The key change here is that fewer nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, are absorbed before the food is passed through the digestive system. In some cases, this could mean not getting enough protein, iron, calcium, or vitamin B12, which might lead to nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, the reduced stomach size limits how much food can be eaten at one time, causing individuals to often feel full quickly.

Over time, this malabsorption can influence eating behavior. For example, individuals may start to choose foods that are higher in protein and lower in sugar or fats to ensure they are getting the necessary nutrients that their bodies require despite the limited absorption. However, some might struggle with maintaining a balanced diet, leading to concerns about malnourishment.
