There are no uniform chronic diseases definition. However, chronic diseases generally refers to diseases which persists for a long time usually three months or more. They are the leading cause of disability and death worldwide. These diseases cannot be prevented by vaccines neither can they be cured by medicines. They also just dont disappear. They can however be managed by medications and other therapies.

Most chronic diseases are caused by having the following risk factors. Lowering this risk may help prevent chronic diseases.
- History of tobacco use including second-hand smokers.
- Unhealthy diet that are low in in fruits and vegetables and high in sodium and saturated fats.
- Physical inactivity (Lack of exercise).
- History of excessive alcohol use.
